2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) IMDb 8,3

A black monolith has an effect on humans, the monolith’s effects focusing on two specific time periods. The first period is four million years ago, at the dawn of man. After the appearance of the monolith, the ape-men begin to display behavior unknown before then. The second period is the near future, in the year 2001. There are five astronauts aboard Discovery One, which is on a mission to Jupiter. At the beginning of the mission, the reason for it is unknown to the five astronauts. Three of the astronauts are in hibernation at the start of the mission to preserve the manpower over its entire course, leaving mission commander Dr. Dave Bowman and Dr. Frank Poole as the two manning the spacecraft. There is another what is often considered “sixth” astronaut on board, HAL 9000 – referred to simply as Hal – the artificially intelligent computer which controls all of the craft’s functions, including the systems keeping the three hibernating astronauts alive. Hal is made all the more astronaut-like as it is given an artificial voice, Hal and the astronauts often having conversations. A 9000 series computer is considered infallible, any error one has ever made being human-caused. Ultimately, Bowman and Poole believe that Hal is malfunctioning, they are unaware that Hal’s behavior is due to knowledge of classified information it has about events at Clavius, a lunar outpost, eighteen months earlier. However, the issue between the astronauts and Hal becomes a fight for survival. The mission in its entirety has profound consequences for the human race.

It is during one of his tests with the invention running that Abe discovers that a protein inside the main unit has multiplied much more rapidly than it could in nature. Rather than the invention being a protein super incubator, Abe, using himself as a guinea pig, and a very meticulous one at that, discovers that the invention can be used as the time machine. In his self-experiment, Abe was especially careful not to interfere with his own self in that time warp.

Abe passes along this discovery to Aaron, who he expects will tell his wife Kara what is the sanctity of their marriage, but he doesn’t want to tell either Robert or Phillip. Much to Abe’s surprise, Aaron does not want to tell Kara, it is the sole intellectual property of just the two of them, in the process of moving the base of operation to a locked storage unit. Aaron’s plan for the two of them is to use the invention to win big in the stock market by knowing through time travel what has happened in the market. With two thoughts on the matter now instead of just one, Aaron and Abe may hit some logistical and philosophical roadblocks in how to move forward.

Adam then becomes obsessed with meeting Claire, who he learns upon first sighting that they look exactly the same, from the facial hair to a scar each has, but Claire who outwardly is more “put together” than Adam. Their lives become intertwined as Claire himself ends up becoming obsessed with Adam but in a slightly different way.

Sam Bell has a three-year contract to work for Lunar Industries. For the contract’s entire duration, he is the sole employee based at their lunar station. There is no direct communication link available between the lunar station and Earth, so his only direct real-time interaction is with GERTY, the intelligent computer whose function is to attend to his day-to-day needs. With such little human contact and all of it indirect, he feels that three years is far too long to be so isolated; he knows he is beginning to hallucinate as the end of his three years approaches. All he wants is to return to Earth to be with his wife Tess and their infant daughter Eve, who was born just prior to his leaving for this job. With two weeks to go, he gets into an accident at one of the mechanical harvesters and is rendered unconscious. Injured, he awakens back at the station in the infirmary, he assumes assisted by GERTY. GERTY tells him that a rescue team named Eliza will come to the station to clean up the aftermath of the accident. After his recuperation, he takes an unauthorized trip back to the broken harvester, where he makes an unexpected discovery. Because of his find, he begins to doubt his sanity, then his true identity, then the company, and GERTY’s willingness to do what is best for him. Because of his resulting beliefs, his sole mission becomes how to get back to Earth on his own.
